Write It By Hand
We type quickly.
We correct before the sentence is finished. Delete a word. Move a paragraph. Search for the name we cannot quite remember.
Writing by hand is different.
The hand cannot keep up with every thought. It has to choose a pace. A sentence develops in front of us and, unless we cross it out, it remains visible.
There is something useful in that.
Not because handwriting is more noble than typing. It is simply another way of paying attention.
The Things We Notice
A notebook does not have to contain our deepest thoughts.
It can hold the name of a flower we saw on the way home. A sentence overheard at dinner. The title of a book someone mentioned. The particular blue of a wall in a room we want to remember.
For years, people kept commonplace books for exactly this reason: to collect passages, ideas, observations and fragments worth returning to.
Perhaps we have made writing by hand too serious.
We call it journalling and immediately expect revelation.
But sometimes a page can simply be a record of attention.
Memory Is Specific
Write down a memory and something curious happens.
At first, we remember the event.
Then the details begin to return.
The glass on the table. The dress someone wore. A song playing from another room. The exact sentence that changed the atmosphere.
Specificity gives a memory its shape.
It also trains us to notice the present more closely.
A cultivated life is not only built through what we read, visit, hear or learn. It is also built through our ability to pay attention to it.
And to remember.
A Midweek Practice
Take one page.
Write by hand for ten minutes.
You might copy a paragraph from a book you love.
Write down ten things you noticed this week.
Describe a room from memory.
Record a conversation without interpreting it.
Or write about a meal: who was there, what was served, when the atmosphere changed.
Do not make it profound.
Be precise.
The colour. The sentence. The gesture. The detail you almost forgot.
Then close the notebook.
You have made a record of what you noticed.
Write it by hand.
